Sail1Design College Sailing Team Race Rankings, ICSA College Sailing Rankings

Sail1Design is proud to manage and sponsor the  College Sailing Team Race Rankings. Rankings are based on college teams’ performance in team race regattas and an average of the polling from our Team Race Ranking staff. If you would like to inquire more about our ranking system, or would be interested in joining the panel, please let us know! ICSA Team Race Panelists include: Ken Legler (Tufts), Bill Healy (Yale), John Vandemoer (Stanford), Ward Cromwell (Charleston), Matt Cohen (MIT), and Brendan Healy (Navy).

Here are the rankings for 08 MAY 2013:  With team race nationals qualifiers now complete, the coaches put together their final national team race rankings before the big event.

Not surprisingly, a number of non-qualifying teams have remained in the Top 15, most notably Tufts University who has had a great season and just barely missed qualifying at the New England Team Race Championship this weekend held on the Charles River in Boston.

Dartmouth and Connecticut College are also ranked teams that fell short of qualifying in the extremely competitive NEISA qualifier, teams that surely could have done some damage at the national championship.

Interestingly enough, the top four teams in the rankings hail from four different conferences! The Stanford University Cardinal of the PCCSC, who have dominated much of the spring season and will be the team to beat at nationals, and remain atop the rankings. Next is Georgetown from MAISA, followed by NEISA's Brown who were late breakers this season but have stepped up to show their talent and won the most competitive qualifier this past weekend. And finally defending National Champions SAISA's College of Charleston rounds out the top four.

Earlier Rankings:

28 March 2013:   Not too much movement in the top of the rankings this week, Stanford still sitting in number 1 with a few more regatta wins under their belt, followed by Charleston, Georgetown, and BC solidly in second, third, and fourth respectively.  St. Mary's took a jump up to fifth, passing Brown and Yale who will be battling with BC for the top New England spot at the SNETR this weekend. Finally back on the water at racing with force is Dartmouth, who jumped out of the woodwork from the last rankings with their debut at the Szambecki and now sits in 9th place. SUNY Maritime was also able to make moves up and ahead of Conn and MIT for a spot in the top 15. ~ Martha Pitt

Stanford
All they do is win! Won Szambecki with another combo of sailors.  Won 5 team races with 5 different combos.  Won 5 of 6 team races this year. Stanford's Human Engineers team with sailors to eliminate jet-lag. With wins at St. Mary's & ODU, Stanford has established themselves as the team to beat.  They have the most aggressive schedule in college sailing & should dominate their team race qualifier.   Three straight wins in a row.  These guys are a clear number 1.
Continued dominance on the TRing circuit. Szambecki showed their likely A team.

Charleston
Can't quite get by the Cardinals Juan getting his team race form back.  Watch out, the Cougars are back! Cougars rebound at ODU from annual anomaly at St. Mary's. With a close 2nd at ODU this past weekend and a win at the GHTR look for the Cougars to show up down in St. Pete. A big bounce back from St. Mary's Team Race.  The Cougars are always on the prowl.
Another great result at the Szambecki. A little rest before SAISA champs, but a possible Nat'ls repeat
2.2

Georgetown
Missed Barney at the Szabecki but still a force Had a great run on Sunday at Szambecki without Barnard.  This team is fast and well coached.  Tough to beat. Grooming more than one superstar freshmen skipper. Sailed well without Chris at ODU.  Look for this team to sail well up at Hobart & earn a spot to the big dance. A weekend without Barnard hurt them, but Georgetown is still the team to beat in MAISA.
Even without their top skipper, Hoyas had a solid showing at ODU.

Boston College
Might need to practice a little more visualization after the Szambecki, a good showing though Missed Bailey at Szambecki.  With him they are best team in NEISA and clearly one of the best in the country. Best freshmen in town. It will be interesting to see who BC puts in to sail for the last couple events of the spring season. Young, quick, aggressive, and disciplined.  This squad is dangerous.  They tweaked their line-up a bit for the Szambecki but expect to see them mixing it up in the top 4 again soon.
Decent job in Norfolk with some reserves getting the start. Great Duplin without their top women's boat.
4.5
5
St. Mary's
Settling in on the A-Team? Getting better.  Looks like Adam and Bill might have their team together.   No shortage of 420 TR practice and getting steadily better. With a 2nd at the GHTR and a 4th at ODU, look for the Seahawks to sail well up at Hobart. The Seahawks tend to get better at every event.  In two weeks at the Prosser, they will be very hard to beat.
Has been pushed at practice by a swarm of teams on break trips. Should translate into Prosser success.

Brown
Coed team has not team raced in a couple of weeks.  Need to practice. A really good team. On spring break now which will help a lot.  This is a scary good team that will battle BC as the best in NE and maybe the country. Too busy nearly winning fleet racing trophies at the moment. This is a solid team who had a great event down at St. Mary's.  Look for Brown to sail well up in NEISA over the next month.
Bears will climb the rankings more once they prove their skills at the upcoming NEISA events.

Yale
Just had a great week of training and the girls won the Duplin! Interesting team.  Didn't have a great St. Mary's TR but I would expect this team to look good at SNETR. Their women can team race too, besting BC at the Duplin. A really good all around team who will certainly be hungry to get out of NEISA after being upset on the Charles last go around. They proved that their second team can play at the Admiral Moore.  As the NEISA team race circuit starts to get going, they will see more playing time and should improve as a team rapidly.
Fast across their squad, needs some more results to better gauge true team race talent.

Roger Williams
Spent a lot of time team racing over spring break.  Will it pay off? Haven't seen them much but Alec Anderson one of the best in college sailing will lead this team.   Will need to gel to get a berth at the show.
Will likely show depth and talent at both SNETR and Ferrarone

Dartmouth
They're Back!!  With a 6th at the Szambecki, we should all be scrared Just had spring break so more practice for them.  Look for them to continue to improve, just need more time. Iced out of early season in more ways than one. Their big debut at the Szambecki looked to have gone well with against the guys who have already seen some playing time.  As they get more time on the water, they should be formidable.
Green had a decent 1st half at ODU, while also competing well at SUNY
9.8

Navy
Being challenged by ODU and Hobart for that third MAISA spot.  This video should pull them through the Prosser Trophy Slipped a little at a tough Szambecki.  They have the skills, just need the wheels. If they can stay ahead of Hobart/WS, ODU & SUNY.… Navy struglled at ODU, but has proven they can team race well.  If the wind is good at Hobart I see them being in the top 3 of MAISA A bit of a slip up at the Szambecki, but the second team's performance at the Admiral Moore shows promise as we get into championship season.
Showed depth with a good "B" showing at SUNY in big breeze while getting some W's at ODU
10.2

Tufts
Camped out all week then got third at the Duplin TR The Jumbos will rise up at New Englands.  Look for them as a spoiler later on.  Biological warfare backfired at Admiral Moore. Another team rotating though their line-up.  As the NEISA circuit gets going, they should only get better.
The Jumbos will be players in NEISA over the next few weekends.
10.5*
12
Hobart and William Smith
Moving on up after a win at the Admiral Moore! Good win at the Admiral Moore.  This team needs time.  More racing equals more success.  On the bubble for nationals.  Dominated the Admiral Moore in the Bronx. Hobart will certainly be a threat with the MAISA qualifier on their home waters. A convincing win with their first team at the Admiral Moore.  Hobart seems to be improving every weekend.
Fresh off of Spring Break, won the Admiral Moore TR convincingly.
10.5*

Old Dominion
The Monarchs are Knockin… Tough Szambecki but can get wins off of anyone. When you host the best regatta, top ten teams will beat you at home. ODU is a dark horse for the MAISA qualifier; GO Monarchs! A tough showing at their home event, but the Monarchs should never be counted out.  Certainly not at the Prosser. Good to see these guys back in contention, aided by young talent. 12.8
14
USF
Solid team.  Should be improved after all those practices with visiting teams over spring break Fast. Scrappy. Dangerous. They'll need Eckerd as a practice partner to stay up there. Firey and young, these guys will benefit greatly from a little more discipline.
A fast force to be reckoned with. Looks likely to qualify for the Big One at home.
13.5
15
SUNY Maritime
Second at the Admiral Moore has these guys in the Empire State of Mind Did well at Admiral Moore.  Well coached. If it's windy at Hobart on 4/6-7 watch out. Another strong performance by their top team at their home event.  Absolutely a player in MAISA.
Strong home result. Can they duplicate it at the Prosser?
14.2
*Ties were broken according to ICSA fleet racing tie breaker rules
Other Notable Teams:
MIT
No appearances since the Sharpe, but these dudes are quick for sure. Excellent team of seniors will add depth at New Englands. Fast, showed could hang with some of NEISA's best at Sharpe (Yale, Brown). Raw
Connecticut College
The Camels make NEISA really deep in team racing.  They will get over the hump of cold weather and will be better with more time on the water. Another team that will benefit from the NEISA circuit getting underway. A bit of a sleeper but Atlantic is back.
Harvard
In one more year will move from spoiler to force.
U Hawaii
Stanford's best competition at home
