These clinics, sponsored by Sail1Design.com, are geared your own needs, whether you wish to improve on techniques in dinghy, keelboat, or high school/collegiate style sailing. S1D has highly qualified individuals to come to your venue, whether it's a clubhouse or to a youth sailing program, and help your sailors with tuning, tactics, boat handling, sail trim, etc.

Tom Sitzmann owner & founder, Sail1Design

Tom Sitzmann is the head coach of the nationally recognized Severn School Sailing Team. This past year Severn School won both the Mid-Atlantic Team Racing and Dinghy Championships, and finished 3rd overall at the HS Dinghy Sailing Nationals. Sitzmann came to Severn after working as the head coach for the Bowdoin College intercollegiate dinghy sailing team in 1999-2005, where he led the Polar Bears to new heights in team racing, dinghy and women's sailing. Before Bowdoin, Sitzmann coached sailing at the US Naval Academy and taught US naval history. While in Maine he also started his own business, a Quantum Sail Design Group Sail Loft, "Quantum Northeast".
Tom also was an assistant coach for the Tufts sailing team. In 1993, Sitzmann returned to the Belmont Hill School -- where he graduated in 1987 -- to coach their sailing program, helping the team qualify for both dinghy and single-handed nationals.
A 1991 graduate of Tufts University, Sitzmann was a member of both the sailing and hockey teams for the Jumbos. He was honored as the most valuable player of the hockey team his junior year and was named a captain for his senior campaign. After college he sailed Lasers and J/24s in the New England circuit, winning the Laser New England District Championship in 1995 and the J/24 Northeast Regional Championship in 1998, and finishing in the top 3 in both the J/24 Midwinter's and East Coast Championships. Sitzmann also earned his MA from Dartmouth College.

Michael Hennon S1D Coach, Administrator of Sail1Design's Coach Consultant Program
Recent projects for Michael include a week long ISAF coaching seminar in Mallorca, Spain with Olympic level coaches from around the world. This summer, Michael spent 4 weeks in Japan coaching youth teams, and consulted with local clubs and sailing organizations in preparation to host major international events such as the Laser Radial Worlds in 2009.
A graduate of Connecticut College, Michael worked for Greenwich Associates, a financial services consulting firm, before moving on to the Yacht Design program at the Landing School. |
John Vandemoer Director, S1D Next Step Elite Youth Sailing Development Program; Coach Consultant

John Vandemoer is currently the head coach of the US Naval Academy after coaching at St. Mary¹s College for two years. While John was at St. Mary¹s he coached his team to a 3rd place finish at Women¹s Nationals and 2nd place in the Fowle Trophy. John also developed nine All Ameri- cans while he was at St. Mary¹s. John ran the Chicago Yacht Club Junior Program for four years, during that time his sailors won three Junior national championships and was 8th at Youth Worlds. John is currently on both USODA and ISSA Boards. Vandemoer is a Graduate of Hobart College where he sailed for four years and was top four at four National Championships including sloops, Team Racing and Dinghies.
John will head up Sail1Design's "next step" youth sailing development, curriculum, and elite clinic program, and will also help administer our coaching consultant system.

Gavin O'Hare Team Leader, S1D Team Race Coaching Program

Gavin O'Hare is a former Head Intercollegiate Dinghy Coach at the United States Naval Academy. Gavin is the chair of US Sailing Team Racing Championship and member of the U.S. Team Racing Association. Gavin is recognized as a Team Racing expert and has authored a book entitled "Contemporary Team Racing." Gavin is a US Sailing Level 1 Instructor and Level 2 Coach, while continuing his competitive sailing experience by racing small sailboats such as Snipes, Vanguard 15's, and Lasers. In 2002 Gavin received the US SAILING Leadership Award for excellence in promoting team racing.
Gavin's role with Sail1Design will focus on team racing curriculum management & development. He will oversee Sail1Design's Team Race clinic best practices, and contribute to our clinic organization and coach procurement.
